Shawn Boyd: A Master Class in Motivation

What drives you? What makes you want to wake up every morning? Is it the daily chase of the almighty dollar? Is it the internal competition to maintain social status? Or is it the true pursuit of happiness? While those questions are rhetorical to every individual, we came across a man who has found his true motivation. Memphis, Tennessee native, Shawn Boyd has created a movement to help others reach their full potential not only spiritually, but also physically, as he urges all who listens to live a healthier lifestyle.   Shawn strides to show others how to be the best whole person they desire to be. “Fitness is not a destination; it is a journey,” says Boyd, who has a story to tell. Intrigued by his ability to speak with conviction; In The 10th prepped for an eye-opening conversation. Ladies and gentlemen listen up, as Mr. Boyd gives us all a Master Class in Motivation.

Motivational speaking is one of those areas that take a lot of thought, patience, and dedication. What led you to this particular calling?

Yes, I agree! Wow, this question takes me back in the day, and I can truly say God prepares you for what you do not even see! I started speaking when way back in church, doing the announcements every Sunday.  I held several positions in high school, such as Student Government President, that forced me to speak to the entire school body on several occasions. I went on to college to hold an office in my fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, and later became the National Pan-Hellenic Council President at MTSU.[1]  After I had graduated from college, my job had me traveling as a college recruiter speaking to high school students across the country. I say all of this to say God was preparing me, and I had no idea what was in his plan. I just simply said, “Jesus where you lead me I will go!” I got into Public Speaking because I saw lives change for the better every time I presented to a group of students. Honestly when I speak, I look at it as a MINISTRY. I ask God to move Shawn out the way and just use me as a vessel. My prayer is simply, “Lord I am the clay MAKE ME, SHAPE ME, and USE ME LORD. IM JUST YOUR SERVANT! Speak through me Jesus! “

Shawn, you are a very busy guy. You have a full-time job as the Coordinator of  Student Affairs, working for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing. You are a husband, a father, and you manage a wedding planning business with your wife. On top of that, you are looking to pursue your Doctorial degree. How do you make time for all these jobs and goals while keeping your sanity?

I grew up with a mom who did the same thing; she worked very hard to make sure that I had the things I need and even many of the things I wanted. My ability to do the same comes from watching her. I grew up doing it all and trying to do it all well! I think when you are in your purpose or calling, it never feels like work! Every day, I get up, whether it is going to work at UT, coaching Team Fit, speaking or mentoring. It all just feels like I am living my dream, so I barely get tired. Now, I do have moments where I call it Family Time and I cut off everything else. I am a husband and a father first before ANYTHING else. I have learned to turn down some things if it interrupts family time. I would never want to be the dad that is in the household, but my kids never see me. Going to my son’s basketball game or my daughter’s school means the world to me. I have also learned that you have to take the time to turn off the world and rest; so you can rejuvenate and come back bigger and better. I am a stickler for my wife, and I taking a big yearly vacation somewhere out of the country. We like to turn our cell phones off and enjoy each other because we both work hard. That is how I keep my sanity.

Fitness is a very fickle industry, but a billion dollar industry. It is pretty clear that you are not one of those fitness coaches who sell dreams and looking to turn a quick buck. What made you add “Team Fit” to your catalog?

I love to see people live their best lives! Too often, so many people die a silent death because of health issues. I saw many of my family members die because of health related causes, many due to weight. So about two years ago, I got serious and started working out myself because I wanted to an example for my family. Things picked up when folks saw me posting pictures on social media, working out and eating better. Every day I got inbox messages on Facebook asking,” Shawn how did you lose the weight” or “Man, I need help with working out; I need motivation!” So, I started a group with just ten folks at first, where we could gather on Facebook, post workouts and share recipes and boom! Today Team Fit has over 350 members!  Now we have  7-week challenges throughout the year where folks have had amazing results and changed their lives for the better! Oh, T-Shirts are now available for Team Fit, and I keep selling out! To me, this is huge! I am rewarded with people who help me live my dream. Brandon Winbush worked with me on getting these shirts made and produced. I see big things coming from him, and we will work together to expand the different designs and colors of more Team Fit shirts to come. With all this support helping me, I am able to help folks live longer and healthier lives! #teamfit #leggo

You have a lot of members of Team Fit on Facebook where you post your weekly workout challenges. In addition to Bible verses and your own personal prayers that serves as words of encouragement to your followers. Walk us through your thought process when you send out these very personal and crafted messages to Team Fit.

Team Fit is not just about working out, it is about folks living a better life. I think a better life is having your spiritual, mental, and physical self all in check! One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 Corinthians 6:19-20  “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?  You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” I make it personal because it is personal to me! The members of Team Fit inspire me daily to go harder. Some of their stories make me want to go harder not only at the gym but also in life!

On February 21st, you launched which looks amazing! Very personal, easy to navigate, and visually appealing. Who should be reading and subscribing to your website?

Man, I’m still pinching myself! I’m actually speechless….because it was the work of God through me! I never wanted to be the celebrity dude or popular guy. I have just had a passion and heart for people my entire life. Proverbs 18:16 “YOUR GIFT WILL MAKE ROOM FOR YOU!” I’m a true example of this verse. When you surrender yourself totally to Gods will, WATCH OUT! Everyone should visit and often for updates on the Shawn Boyd Movement! If you need a keynote speaker, I have excellent workshops that would be great for any audience. I also do life coaching and mini coaching sessions such as interview prep, relationships, etc. Go now and check out the new site Like I said earlier, I am rewarded with people who help me with my dream. On that note, I’d like to give a huge shout out to the very talented young lady who designed the website for me, Marlina Love, a junior at the University of Memphis.  That’s another reason to check out my site, so you can also check out her work!

I have just had a passion and heart for people my entire life.

With all these things you’ve got going on, what’s next?

Wow, maybe the better question is what’s not next! I dream big! I am a true visionary who dreams daily. When I reach one dream, I’m on to the next. Hey, you only live once!  I never want to be one of those people who say I should have, I could have, but I didn’t! I want to leave a legacy behind for generations like many men have done for me such as the Martin Luther King Jr. and many other great men. I’m about to start working on a book this summer so stay tuned. I can’t give too much information on it yet.

Why do you think In The 10th is important?

I think In The 10th is important because it’s a one stop shop for men of color to be educated on culture, politics, fashion, relationships, and education. All the things that make us well rounded and knowledgeable in today’s society.

Favorite way to relax?

My favorite way to relax on a bigger scale is to travel out of the country to an all inclusive resort. I like to lay on the beach all day with a good book and a drink in my hand but that only happens once a year. On a smaller scale, just a glass of Merlot and chill in my man cave catching up on shows on my DVR.

If you could have a song play when you stepped out of a car, walked down the street or into a room full of people, what song would it be?

“Excuse Me Miss,” Jay-Z featuring Pharell. It provides me with a no worries, no stress mentality.

If someone were to create a movie about you what would the title be?

Movie Title? Let me think…MAN ON FIRE.

If you could have lunch with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr.

Successful people go hard, no matter what they do.-Shawn Boyd
